My goal is to help students understand the world we live in, which ultimately helps them to define themselves. Every topic is taught with a multicultural approach, in order to promote cross-cultural understanding and tolerance, my goal being to inspire social change. The following will discuss 1) what I want students to learn, 2) my goals and objectives as a teacher, and 3) why I am a teacher.
First and foremost I want students to understand the world we live in, and for them to discover their place in it. I want the students to develop a better understanding of the world through art by investigating art from other cultures. We will explore why people make art, why people need art, and how art helps us to understand other cultures. Art is the language by which we can all communicate.
In and outside of the classroom I hope they will be able to learn to speak about art critically and intelligently; not just about other artists work, but their own art work as well. I want the students to think for themselves, develop and enrich their critical thinking skills and engage in daily class dialogue. During which I want the students to learn about the historical background, art history, and social/political history that influenced the art we review in class. Most of all I want them to respect themselves and each other. I want them to want to come to class every day.
The most significant job I have is teaching the students how to think for themselves. My goal is to teach the students by asking them questions. Every class period will be lead by inquiry questioning, which will help to promote higher order thinking, the students’ critical thinking skills and most importantly, creativity.
